What's New?

Gossip, gossip gossip! There is no new law regarding changing the minimum age to 18 for teens. This is an urban myth that is heard almost weekly in the industry. Part of this statement is true however, the critical part of the statement is ALWAYS missing. California vehicle code section 12512 reads as follows: Except as provided in Sections 12513, 12514, and 12814.6, no license to drive shall be issued to a person under the age of 18 years.

The fact remains since 1956 - you may get a license at the age of 16 provided you have taken driver education and driver training, have a permit for a minimum of 6 months, practice 50 hours with your parents, and pass the skill (road) test.  Remember you heard the truth here first!

Check out 2006 Legislation here!. These laws are enacted and in full force. Pending Legislation

Other Legislation

  • AB 397  Increases driver training to 10 hours.
  • AB 963   Cell phones and driving
  • AB 305   Evading a peace officer.
  • AB 406   Mandatory revocation for DUI
  • AB 1447 Violations of a provisional license
